Stoltenberg explained why NATO member states are in no hurry to provide Ukraine with modern fighter jets

The Secretary General of NATO said that the negotiations on the provision of modern aircraft to Ukraine have been ongoing since the beginning of the full-scale war with the Russian Federation.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg explained that there is now an urgent need to provide military support to Ukraine, and the supply of modern fighter jets will take time. However, he assured that consultations with NATO member countries regarding the aircraft are ongoing.

Stoltenberg told about this in an exclusive interview with TSN.

«In particular, we talk about this at consultations with NATO member countries. Such consultations – about what we should supply to Ukraine – have been going on since the war began. And what we see – the support provided by NATO members – has become much bigger as the war got bigger. Starting with javelins, anti-tank weapons, anti-aircraft artillery, then armored vehicles, heavy tanks, and now we’re discussing airplanes. Let me say that regardless of the decision on airplanes, I think we need to understand that there is an urgent need to provide support right now, and the delivery of aircraft will take time. Therefore, we must complete what the member states have already promised – regarding tanks, regarding air defense systems,» – he explained.

The second reason, as noted by the NATO Secretary General, is that it is now important to discuss what new types of weapons should be provided to Ukraine and whether they work effectively on the battlefield.

«But it is equally important to make sure that the weapons that Ukraine has already received work as they should. So we have to make sure that we deliver enough ammunition and spare parts to keep these weapons running, because otherwise Ukraine will not be able to win this war,» – he noted.
