Atrocities in Bucha: NYT journalists identified 22 occupiers who killed Ukrainians

The 234th Regiment is part of the 76th Guards Airborne Assault Division, which the Prosecutor General’s Office suspects of atrocities in Buch.

Journalists identified 22 Russian soldiers who killed civilians in Buchi during the occupation of the city in March 2022. These are fighters of the 234th Airborne Assault Regiment of the Russian Federation.

This is reported by The New York Times.

Thus, journalists analyzed recordings of telephone conversations, documents, interviews and thousands of hours of video. The results show that the Russian airborne unit killed dozens of people on Yablunska Street in Buch in March. The invaders also took mobile phones from the victims and immediately called Russia or Russian phone numbers.

The Ukrainian authorities provided the publication with a database of all phone calls and messages made to Russia from the Buchan region during March. Journalists collected their phone numbers from the relatives of the dead and checked whether these numbers were in the provided database. It was found that the Russian military regularly called the Russian Federation from the phones of the victims, and often did so only a few hours after the killing of civilians.

Journalists also spoke with the occupiers themselves and their relatives. Two confirmed that they were in the 234th regiment and «served in Buch». Regiment commander Artem Horodilov led these operations, and this was confirmed by the Russian military.

The publication emphasizes the presence of other evidence that war crimes in Buch were committed by Russian paratroopers of the 234th regiment. In particular, this is evidenced by the symbols that the enemy troops tried to hide on their equipment left in Bucha, as well as the documentation and personal records of the invaders.

Thus, in one of the records on the paper, the number of the military unit of the Pskov paratroopers is indicated – military unit 74268. In addition, the Russian soldiers left the armbands of the regiment in Buch. Also, the equipment of the 234th regiment was fixed at the places where the victims were shot.

In total, the journalists established the identities of 22 occupiers from the 234th regiment, and also identified the bodies of 36 enemy victims on Yablonska Street.

It cannot be said with certainty that it was these Russian soldiers who killed certain civilians in Buch. However, the presence of the 234th regiment in Ukraine is also evidenced by other information. In particular, it is known that before the invasion of Russia, Horodilov was in Belarus among the Russian military. A commander similar to him was also recorded in Buchi. The man was seen with two bodyguards when he walked the streets of the city near the bodies of the murdered Ukrainians.

Note that after the liberation of Kyiv Oblast, when the world learned about the atrocities of the invaders in Buch, Horodilov and other Russian invaders were awarded the Order of Courage in Russia.
