Sound, art, and technologies – interaction between these three phenomena lies in the concept of RadioGarage – a new interdisciplinary space that has been recently opened in Lviv. It was arranged on the ground floor of the historical building of Lviv radio, in the place of a former garage, located on Kniazia Romana, 6 street. The information was reported by the Lviv City Council.
RadioGarage is a subdivision of the Museum of Radio, which belongs to the municipal enterprise Lviv Radio. It will be a place for creating exhibitions and art installations, organising workshops, discussions and educational programs. Media archeology, radio engineering, sound and multimedia art, digital security, programming, and the open-source electronics platform Arduino are just a few examples of topics that RadioGarage will introduce to the visitors.
«RadioGarage is an integral part of the Lviv Radio Museum. In this space, we plan training, experiments, research and discussions on the border of art, science, technology and acoustics. In 2020, restoration and conservation, development of a new concept, design and repair works began», – explained Natalia Bunda, Director of the Development department of Lviv City Council.
According to her words, it will also be a space for assembling devices that work with radio waves. Here, a gallery-laboratory for working with sound is located, where you can listen to works of sound art, both academic and experimental music.
RadioGarage plans to provide not just on-site training, but also organise trips to the city for researching non-obvious sound environments and phenomena of the city architecture – from electromagnetic fields to sound landscapes.
One of the first projects of RadioGarage will be the exhibition «Tilky u Lvovi» («Only in Lviv»), which opens in July and is dedicated to the history of Lviv radio in the multicultural environment of the city. The name of the exhibition isn’t random, because Lviv radio is connected to the origin of the song with the same name.
«The next important stage in the development of Lviv Radio is the creation of the first interactive Radio Museum in Ukraine on the second floor of the historic building, as well as the creation of a radio laboratory on the 4th floor», – says Myroslava Liubkovych, acting Director of the municipal enterprise Lviv Radio.
Attention should also be paid to the building, where the new art-space has emerged.
«RadioGarage is located in a unique building, which has been the center of Lviv radio broadcasting since the 1930s. Contemporary art space is harmoniously integrated into the style of architecture of the building and emphasizes its historicity and modernity. RadioGarage will become a place where invisible media (like radio) will become visible and accessible to every inhabitant of our city», – says Bohdan Shumylovych, critic of art and historian.
The building of Lviv Radio was built in 1912–1913 according to the project of architect Adolf Piller. In 2020, work began on the restoration, conservation, development of a new concept, design and repair work in the space of Radio Garage.
Now in this house, two entrance gates from the sides of Kniazia Romana street and O. Nyzhankivskoho street have been restored in this house, as well as the old metal stairs and railings from the first floor to the basement.
In addition, the room itself was repaired, where ornamental paintings on the walls and remnants of the floor, made of glass blocks of the famous company «Luxfer», were found. To preserve the history, such glass windows («luxpheres») were ordered from the Lviv artist Oles Dzyndra and installed from the Kniazia Romana street for getting and refracting daylight in the basement of RadioGarage.
