The Lviv City Council has registered a public initiative to rename part of the streets of the Lviv community, named after Russian figures or place names. This was announced by the director of the department of the Lviv city agglomeration Yurii Lukashevskyi.

In particular, according to him, it is proposed to rename the following streets in the Lychakiv district and annexed settlements:

Kozlaniuka Street (named after Petro Kozlaniuk, a pro-Moscow writer from Ivano-Frankivsk) – to Mariupol’s Street, because it carried this name during 1946-1966.

Korolenka Street (named after Volodymyr Korolenko, a XIX century Russian-speaking writer of Polish origin from Zhytomyr) – to rename it in honour of the last leader of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, Vasyl Kuk, or opera singer Vasyl Slipak, who fought on Donbas and died near Debaltseve in 2016. According to the initiators, this would be relevant because the Warrior’s House is located on this street.

Also, they proposed as most appropriate to rename the Nekrasova Street (named after the Russian poet Nikolay Nekrasov) in honour of some famous Ukrainian doctor. The historical name of this street was Bichna Shpytalna («side hospital street»).

Akademika Pavlova Street (named after Russian researcher Ivan Pavlov) – possibly to Markiyan Ivashchyshyn’s street (in honour of a famous Lviv activist and entrepreneur, the leader of Student Brotherhood and founder of «Dzyga» restaurant).

On the Rossi Street, the historical name Vitriakova («windmills») can be restored (it was named so from 1945 to 1950, 1871 to 1938)

Leva Tolstoho Street (named in honour of Russian writer Lev Tolstoy) – possibly in honour of a famous Ukrainian Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi.

A. Chekhova Street (named after Russian poet Anton Chekhov) – to George Orwell’s or Jones Gareth’s (the first time in the West wrote about the Holodomor).

It is also proposed to change the names of streets in Vynnyky, in particular, the streets of Yuri Gagarin, Vasyl Zhukovskyi, Mikhail Lermontov. In Rudno – Yurii Gagarin, Dmitry Mendeleev, Alexander Nevsky, Korolenko.

Suggestions of the citizens can be left in the comments to Yurii Lukashevsky’s post.

It will be recalled that in Lviv, a group of initiators proposed renaming more than thirty streets named after Russian figures. Instead, the streets are proposed to be named after Ukrainian prominent figures. This is planned to be done in May, before the City’s Day. A special commission, headed by the first deputy mayor, is currently working on the renaming.
