A strategic program for the bicycle network development was approved in Lviv, featuring the plans for mobility improvement in the Lviv territorial community untill 2030. A relevant decision was supported today, on September 22, during the «riding» session of Lviv City Council.

Today’s extraordinary session took place on recently repared Pekarska street, with the deputies sitting on their bicycles. Such a format is timed to the European Mobility Week and World Car-Free Day.

The agenda included two main strategic questions, namely the development of bicycle network untill 2030 and the sustainable urban mobility plan.

The head of City Council’s transport department Orest Oleskiv reported during the sitting that municipal establishment «City Institute» works on the renovation program for the bicycle network in Lviv and adjoined territories.

«This decision foresees 14 small projects to help unite the existing bicycle network and make it more convenient. In particular, among them there’s a project which aims to connect Sykhiv district with the city centre», – Orest Oleskiv says.

Also, the sustainable mobility plan for ten years was approved during the session. It was presented by the head of «City Institute» Oleksandr Kobzarev.

He noted that the city will develop solutions and gradual measures to solve six main mobility issues in Lviv:

  • The movement security. He reported that during last year, 30 people died in road traffic accidents in Lviv, 14 of them are pedestrians and a cyclist.
  • Arrangement of convenient environment for movement on foot.
  • High-quality and predictable public transport.
  • Rising number of vehicles in Lviv. The city cannot keep up with it to expand the infrastructure, as the number of cars increases 25% annually.
  • Infrastructure development throughout all parts of the city, both in the centre and in the suburbs
  • All the departments which manage mobility in the city must be united into one structure. Oleksandr Kobzarev says that soon, a Mobility department will be established.

Let us recall that in March this year, Lviv cyclists’ association held a protest near the City Hall. the participants demanded from the city deputies to provide a proper funding for the construction of bicycle routes in Lviv and their logical completion.
