Educational work, conversation in the Ukrainian language, and a Ukrainian-speaking environment will give the refugees from the South-Eastern part of Ukraine the opportunity and impetus to speak the Ukrainian language. It will be a slow transition, but the more aggressively Ukrainian-speakers react to their compatriots who continue use Russian, the more resistance they will encounter. Therefore, such aggression will not encourage the latter to learn the Ukrainian language, but rather will have the opposite effect. Halyna Karpuk, a psychologist and psychotherapist at the «Sens» studio, told about this in the studio of «Tvoe Misto» media hub.

«What we can do is to speak Ukrainian. To expect that the resettled people will immediately start speaking Ukrainian – beautifully, literarily and fluently – is an unrealistic expectation,» – says Halyna Karpuk.

According to her, it’s important to remember that we have only one enemy – Russia, so it is better to stabilize all your emotions through physiological processes and other activities, for example, playing sports, or walking at an intense pace.

At the same time, on the legislature level, changes to the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses enter into force on July 16. According to them, the State Language Protection Commissioner has the right to impose fines on anyone who violates the language law. These would relate to judges, waiters, civil servants, in particular, heads of the Regional Military Administrations and city mayors who refuse to provide their services in Ukrainian.

We will remind that the majority of internally displaced persons who moved to the Lviv region during the war try to communicate in the Ukrainian language. However, at home, in everyday life, about 80% of refugees communicate in two languages, or only in Russian.
