World War I projectile named the reason for two deaths in the Carpathians

On September 15, two people died in the Carpathian mountains, and four got injured because of the World War I projectile’s explosion. The police of the Zakarpattia region reported such a conclusion after the investigation of the incident.

«According to preliminary information, in the mountains near Rakhiv [a town in the Zakarpattia region – ed.], a projectile from the World War I times exploded, after which two tourists died and five were hospitalised with injures of varying severity and contusion», – the report states.

On September 15, a woman from the Ivano-Frankivsk region called the police saying that her husband witnessed the explosion in the mountains near Rakhiv.

As the report also informs, the tourists rested in the place located on the Arpad Line – a line of fortifications built during the 1941-1944 years. At the site where the incident had happened, police found a pothole caused by the explosion and fragments of corroded metal similar to World War I shell fragments. In total, there were twelve people, among them two children two and five years old. The investigators specified that the latter didn’t get injured.

Given these facts, the police opened a criminal case under the article «premeditated murder» of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
