Today, Ukraine’s priority is not to join NATO, but to win the war, after which the Alliance is ready to return to negotiations. This was stated by the official representative of the Alliance, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

«Now the focus of the Ukrainian government is to win the war. And that’s something we fully support. When Ukraine wants to talk about the next steps again, we will return to this issue. Now, the focus us all is to make the biggest contribution that would help Ukraine on the battlefield against the Russian invaders. And when Ukraine is ready to return to the issue of time intervals... Again, it will be decided by Ukraine. However, the focus now is to win the war,» – says the Alliance representative.

The NATO representative emphasized that the decision made by the Allies in 2008 at the Bucharest Summit is unchanged.

«It works. We still see Ukraine as a NATO member in the future. It is up to Ukraine to decide when and how to make decisions. The progress we saw yesterday with Finland and Sweden demonstrates very clearly that NATO’s door remains open. There is no fatigue from the expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance,» – he noted.

According to the representative of the Alliance, Ukraine is critically important for the entire European security.

«It is also important for global security because what Russia is doing now in relation to Ukraine is also what it can do in relation to others. However, for us in NATO, Ukraine should be an independent and territorially sovereign country in terms of security. This is critical to our security. And that won’t change either,» – he concluded.

We’ll remind that Ukraine must complete a number of bureaucratic procedures before becoming a member of the European Union, so this process can take at least 7 years. Read our material regarding this topic.
