As a result of the full-scale war in Ukraine, 744 children have died, and another 2363 are considered missing. In addition, 2904 children have suffered injuries of varying degrees of severity, and 23 cases of war-related sexual violence against minors have been documented.
About this reported Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets during an interactive dialogue with the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine within the framework of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council.
According to the ombudsman, about 1.6 million Ukrainian children may currently be in the temporarily occupied territories (TOT) of Ukraine. The Russian Federation systematically deprives them of their Ukrainian identity: issues Russian documents, forcibly places them in Russian families, displaces them, and subjects them to intensive propaganda.
Lubinets drew special attention to the forced militarization of Ukrainian children in the occupied territories. Russia forces minors to undergo military training and conscripts thousands of young men into its army to train a new generation of soldiers and continue the war against Ukraine with their own hands.
Dmytro Lubinets called on the international community to join the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, help locate every child, and ensure their safe return home. He also stressed the need to demand a complete list from Russia of all illegally deported and displaced Ukrainian children in accordance with the Fourth Geneva Convention and to grant international missions access to the TOT.
