The restoration of the secessionist metal gate of the building at No. 22 Stryiska Street in Lviv is ongoing – one of the architectural gems of the early 20th century. During the work, restorers discovered the authentic green color of the structure and are recreating lost elements of artistic blacksmithing. This was reported by LKP "Heritage Bureau".
Building No. 22, along with neighboring buildings No. 24 and No. 26, is part of one of the best-preserved ensembles of Lviv secession. The complex was built in 1906 according to the design of architect Napoleon Lushkevych, and construction work was carried out by Ivan Levynskyi's firm. The facades of the buildings are decorated with mascarons, floral ornaments, and decorative stucco characteristic of secession.
Restorer Yuriy Mykolaishyn is working on the gate's restoration. During the structural research, specialists determined that one of the largest lost elements is the authentic skylight measuring 210×140 centimeters. A similar element is also missing on the gate of the neighboring building No. 24. The original interior and exterior latches have also not survived, and some decorative wrought-iron details will have to be recreated based on historical analogues.
One of the most interesting finds was the discovery of the gate's original green color under numerous layers of later paint. This is the color that restorers plan to restore after all the work is completed.
To restore the lost details, the craftsmen are using similar secessionist gates that have been preserved on Sevastopolska and Verkhnianskyi streets. At the same time, the structure of the historical skylight had to be redesigned, focusing on the early 20th-century Lviv secession style and modern safety requirements.
During the restoration, serious damage to the lower part of the gate is also being rectified. Due to repeated sidewalk repairs, the pavement level gradually rose, leading to rainwater and meltwater entering the structure. This caused significant metal corrosion.
In addition to their architectural value, the buildings on Stryiska Street have a rich history. In different years, sculptor Petro Harasymovych, professor Kazimierz Kwieciński, pharmacologist Leon Popielski, and the world-renowned anthropologist Jan Czekanowski lived here.
Restoration work is currently ongoing. After its completion, the historic gate will regain its authentic appearance.
