"It is to become almost one and a half times wider": at what stage is the repair of the road connecting Lviv and Warsaw

The capital repair of the "Lviv-Rava-Ruska" road is being carried out with funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Capital repairs of the international highway "Lviv-Rava-Ruska" are underway in Lviv Oblast. This road is part of the Trans-European Transport Network and the main route connecting Lviv with Warsaw.

at what stage the road repair is and when it is planned to be completed, on air on "Ukrainian Radio. Lviv" said Oleh Bereza, head of the Service for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure in Lviv Oblast.

As the official noted, according to the project, the "Lviv-Rava-Ruska" road is to become almost one and a half times wider.

"In places where it is possible to widen it, we can expand it to three or even four lanes. Accordingly, all overpasses and bridges are being reconstructed. Safety measures are also being added, i.e., barriers, traffic lights, lighting, pedestrian paths, and including bicycle paths, which are planned along the route from Lviv to Zhovkva and in some sections to Rava-Ruska", said Oleh Bereza.

He added that the contractors have completed approximately 50% of the work for a total amount of 50 million euros.

The works are being carried out by two companies:

Onur company is carrying out works on the section from Lviv to Zhovkva, with an object readiness of approximately 50%;
Avtomagistral-Pivden company is carrying out capital works on the section from Zhovkva to Rava-Ruska, with approximately 45% of the work completed there.

"The total amount for Onur is 27 million euros, for Avtomagistral - 22 million euros. On most sections, the lower and middle layers of the asphalt concrete pavement have already been laid. On a length of 44 km, the installation of the top layer is also underway, with about 10 km already completed", noted the head of the Service for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure in Lviv Oblast.

Oleh Bereza also reported that, in addition to this, work is ongoing on overpasses and bridges. A total of 13 artificial structures needed to be repaired on the section from Lviv to Rava-Ruska.

"On the section under the responsibility of the company 'Onur,' one bridge structure has already been completed. Five more are at readiness levels from 53-95%. The bridge in Kulikiv is the most important, so it will be completed the fastest. On the section under the responsibility of 'Avtomagistral-Pivden,' three bridges have already been completed. Three more bridges are at readiness levels from 80 to 92%, and one structure, in Rava-Ruska, is at 46%," the official said.

According to Bereza, the bridge in Kulikiv will be fully repaired and opened to traffic by the end of July.

Construction of an overpass over the railway track

Oleh Bereza also spoke about the stage of construction of the overpass over the railway track, between the settlements of Velyki Hrybovychi and Malehiv.

According to him, it will consist of two parts, so to speak.

"The new part – all five supports have already been installed there, and work on the deck is underway. That is, once we complete the work on this bridge, we will open it and allow traffic on the newly built structure. And the existing structure will be subject to restoration, meaning a full capital repair will be carried out, and it will be investigated what exactly needs to be replaced there," the official noted.

Given that these will be two constructed artificial structures (overpasses, which will carry traffic), work there will take a longer time, as it is a complex construction process.

The capital repair of the Lviv-Rava-Ruska road is being carried out with funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The budget is 103 million euros.

"International experts play a very important role here. The Turkish company 'Dolsar' carries out full technical supervision and support of this project from the beginning of construction to its end, including accepting completed works. If any adjustments occur or new design solutions are proposed, that is also their prerogative. They, on behalf of the financing bank, fully control these processes to ensure complete and high-quality execution of the works under the contract," stated the head of the Service for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure in Lviv region.

Oleh Bereza summed up that the entire complex of works according to the plan should be completed by July 2027.

From July 10 on the Ternopil – Lviv – Rava-Ruska highway temporarily traffic for trucks and international buses has been restricted.
