Historian and People’s Deputy Volodymyr Vyatrovych claims that the law «On Media«, which the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported in the first reading on August 30, includes anti-Ukrainian norms.

According to the politician, in the text submitted for the first reading, there was a proposal to cancel the ban on the broadcast of phonograms, audiograms, and clips of Russian singers, which had been adopted in June. The List of persons who pose a threat to national security would also be levelled.

In addition, the law reduces the level of control over Ukrainian-language films, allows a 10% violation of the quota for Ukrainian songs on the radio, and invalidates the norms prohibiting positive coverage of the authorities of the aggressor state.

Vyatrovych noted that 34 people’s deputies appealed to Parliament’s Speaker, Ruslan Stefanchuk, to withdraw the draft law from the upcoming plenary session. However, it was passed in its first reading unchanged.

«Many voted, believing the promises of the draft law’s authors to take into account the amendments that preserve the protection of the Ukrainian cultural space. And I am sure that if these amendments are not really taken into account, the media law will not receive the majority of 226 votes in the second reading. Thus, no mantras about European integration will work anymore,» – he wrote.

As the civil movement «Vidsich» stated, the authorities are again trying to destroy the protection of the Ukrainian informational and cultural space and weaken the position of the Ukrainian language.

«Pests in power are trying to demine the cultural border with Russia,» – they write.

At the same time, as Ukrainska Pravda writes, the approval of the law «On Media» is one of the criteria necessary for the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. The EU representation in Ukraine supported the parliament’s plans to consider it. The draft law should ensure a competitive media market with equal rules for all, an independent regulator, and comply with the EU audiovisual directive.

We will remind you that the main author of the draft law «On Media» in the 2022 version is the head of the Committee on Humanitarian Policy from «Servant of the people» party, Mykyta Poturaev. 233 People’s Deputies voted «for» the relevant decision. In particular, 179 deputies from «Servant of the People», 6 – from «Batkivshchyna», 12 – «Platform for Life and Future», 7 – Party «For the Future», 12 – «Trust», 12 – «Recovery» and 5 non-faction. «European Solidarity» and «Holos» did not vote for the document.
