The jury of the All-Ukrainian open architectural blitz competition chose the best project proposal of the Center for Social Innovations on the street Ivana Franka, 58 in Lviv. The winner was the project of the local author’s team consisting of Valentin Sharovatov, Olha Kryvoruchko, Anastasia Nikulina, Danylo Halandzhiy, Maria Hasyuk, Anastasia Hapanovych, Yurii Kryvoruchko.

«The task for the architects was to propose a project proposal for the reconstruction of two non-residential buildings belonging to the monastery. One of them is a historic building, but has no protected status and is in poor condition. In the second case, there is a school that has an important social function, but is very limited in space. During its existence, the historic building has gradually become a unique part of Ivana Franka Street,» – press-service of the Lviv city council quotes the chief architect of Lviv Anton Kolomeytsev.

According to him, the winning project proposed a solution that contradicts all submitted projects: while all tried different ways to offer a new volume that would continue ordinary construction, the winners went and offered to keep the existing one-story historic building. In addition, the designed object retains the usual visibility on the territory of the monastery, but at the same time, closes the firewall of the existing residential building with a new sustained facade.

The purpose of the projected centre of social innovation is the missionary activity of the Redemptorist monks, which includes the social component. In particular, there will be a centre for children with autism spectrum disorders, facilities for psychological assistance and psychological support, support for parents and children, as well as spaces that will be used for meetings of youth communities.

«Due to the unusual configuration, the designed building seems to dissolve into space. On the one hand, it closes the unattractive deaf end of the existing house, on the other – the main facade turns to the monastery courtyard. The interior space flows into the garden and courtyard in front of the monastery thanks to the barrier-free solution of the first floor and large glazed surfaces. The entrance from Franka Street is an interesting attempt to combine new and old buildings,» – adds Lilia Onyshchenko, head of the Lviv city council’s Department of Historic Environment Protection.

It will be recalled that the competition was organized jointly with the Lviv Province of the Congregation of the Most Holy Saviour (Redemptorists) of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which appealed to the City Council on urban planning conditions and restrictions for the new Center, and the Lviv regional organization of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine. House on the street Ivana Franka belongs to the International Monastic Redemptorist Congregation, is in disrepair and needs reconstruction. It was planned that the Center would open no sooner than 2023.
