Five people were hospitalised for carbon monoxide poisoning in Lviv, namely, three adults and two children. This was reported by the Lviv City Council’s press service.

The incident occurred 19 January, at about 19:30 in an apartment of a four-story building on the street Horodotska, 297 in Lviv. Five people were poisoned by carbon monoxide, including three adults – a woman born in 1977, a man born in 1964, and a woman born in 1985, and two children – a boy born in 2006 and a boy born in 2013. The victims were hospitalised in medical institutions of the city. In particular, four people are in a state of moderate severity, and a 16-year-old boy is in a serious condition.

The apartment is equipped with a stove and water heater working on gas. Emergency crew of the state company «LvivHaz» temporarily suspended the gas supply to the house. The circumstances of the event are being established.

We will add that in the beginning of January, five citizens of Lviv, among whom one child, suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. Last week, two people were poisoned by carbon monoxide in an apartment in Lviv’s city centre.

For reference

Carbon monoxide is a killer without color and odor, so be sure to check the serviceability of heaters, traction in chimneys, learn the rules of handling different types of heaters.

The first signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are headache and nausea, there may be loss of consciousness. Children and pregnant women, as well as people with lung and cardiovascular diseases, are the first to react to the poisoning. Inherent signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are pale skin and redness of the face.

If there is a suspicion of carbon monoxide poisoning, you must first open the windows and doors, and then deal with the evacuation of victims. Hospitalization should be mandatory.

To prevent poisoning, Lviv residents are advised to:

  • to provide employees of «LvivHas» with the opportunity to inspect and clean the smoke and ventilation ducts in the apartment;
  • adhere to the rules of gas supply safety: ensure the inflow of fresh air, check the serviceability of smoke ventilation ducts, etc.;
  • do not use gas appliances in bathrooms, as they burn oxygen in the room and form heavy products that do not exit through the ventilation duct;
  • make sure there is traction before igniting the gas appliance;
  • monitor the air supply to the room through a window or ventilator in a plastic frame, especially in winter;
  • do not use a gas stove to heat the room;
  • do not leave heating appliances unattended during sleep.

Remember that plastic windows can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
