Two Kyiv schoolchildren — Roman Melamud and Rostyslav Yabchenko — won gold medals at the first European Artificial Intelligence Olympiad, which took place from July 14 to 19 in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca. Roman Melamud became the absolute winner of the competition, in which 94 students from 24 countries participated. This was reported by reported DOU.
Results of the Ukrainian team and the course of the competition
The absolute winner among all 94 participants was Roman Melamud, a graduate of the Mariupol Lyceum of Kyiv. Rostyslav Yabchenko, an eleventh-grader from Lyceum No. 145, won the second "gold" for the Ukrainian team.
The Ukrainian team also included Vladyslav Dakhno from Kyiv Lyceum No. 145 and Andriy Tatarinov from Kremenchuk Lyceum "Polit", who finished 9th grade. The team was trained by coach Valentin Melnyk, and Anton Yastrub also worked with Andriy Tatarinov. In the team standings, Ukraine took second place, losing only to Sweden.
On the air of the "Kyiv24" TV channel, Rostyslav Yabchenko spoke about how the Olympiad went.
The Olympiad consisted of two rounds, which lasted two days. Each round contained three tasks, during which participants applied machine learning techniques - from classification to less traditional tasks. For each task, participants could get from 0 to 100 points. Schoolchildren created and trained artificial intelligence models, after which their solutions were automatically evaluated by a special platform based on the quality of the result.
Yabchenko noted that this is a competition of answer accuracy, so "the fight for single points is really big." He emphasized that the competition was serious: although the discipline is new for olympiads, many countries are interested in the topic, so it is impossible to achieve a high result without thorough preparation.
Yabchenko also mentioned that not everyone needs to delve into the technical details of artificial intelligence, but those who are interested in the topic should understand its principles of operation, as even classical algorithms – like recommendations on social networks – have already changed many spheres of life.
Tournament format and previous successes of Ukrainians
The European Artificial Intelligence Olympiad was held for the first time. It was created according to the IAIO standards as an analogue of the Central European Olympiad in Informatics.
This is already the second success of the season for the Ukrainian team: in February, at the international IAIO Olympiad in Slovenia, the team won four medals, and Roman Melamud and Rostyslav Yabchenko were also part of it.
