Today, 59% of Ukrainians consider it necessary to significantly limit themselves in entertainment and shopping, 36%, on the other hand, believe that they should try to live a full life. This is evidenced in the results of a survey by the «Rating» sociological groups, which was conducted on June 18-19.

Young people under 35 are less inclined to self-restraint (only 46% support it). Also, people who work full-time (55%) or part-time (58%) limit themselves less, probably believing that their front is economic (paying taxes, helping the army).

«War evokes a large number of feelings and thoughts, which are often opposite and contradictory, many things no longer have shades but become black and white, become unequivocal and categorical. A person faces a high level of stress, experiences «survivor’s guilt», «witness trauma» and other states that are associated with war. One of the consequences of such conditions is a change in habitual behaviour and priorities. Self-blame, self-limitation in pleasures, opportunities to enjoy life or even to lead a normal «peaceful life» are increasing,» – sociologists explain.

The most acceptable is to go to the gym (84%), visit beauty salons (67%), celebrate your own birthday (62%). Less acceptable are leisure activities in nature (grilling barbecue) – 42%, going to restaurants and cafes (37%). Other positions are probably considered redundant, such that you can do without. This especially applies to expensive products and clothes, which are not what is needed in the first place, especially given the fact that occupied regions or damaged cities suffer from a lack of basic products, clean water, medicine, etc.

The older age group (51+) is most prone to prohibitions, especially regarding the purchase of expensive products, clothes and visits to restaurants or cafes. The least age differences apply to sports and beauty salons. Women, in contrast to men, are also less favourable to «peaceful life behaviour» with the exception of visits to beauty salons, where there are no gender differences.

Regarding macro-regional differences: residents of the West more often find it unacceptable to celebrate their own birthday and buy expensive products and clothes. Those who have relatives who are fighting are somewhat less inclined to limit themselves. Perhaps, sociologists suggest, this is due to the fact that they feel less guilty, since someone close to them is already «paying» for their peaceful life.

We will add that the survey was conducted on June 18-19, 2022 among the population of Ukraine aged 18 and older in all regions, except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas, as well as territories where there is no Ukrainian mobile communication at the time of the survey. The results are weighted using current data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. The sample is representative in terms of age, gender and type of settlement. The sample population is 1200 respondents. The survey method is telephone interviews with the use of a computer. The error of representativeness of the study with a confidence probability of 0.95: no more than 2.8%.

We would like to remind you that according to the results of the 13th national survey in the conditions of war, conducted by the sociological group «Rating» on June 18-19, 69% of Ukrainians surveyed believe that Ukraine will join the EU in 5 years.
