Lviv has become one of the largest cities in Ukraine by population, overtaking Odesa and Dnipro. According to Forbes Ukraine, as of mid-2026, about 986 thousand people lived in Lviv. This is reported by Forbes Ukraine.

For comparison, Dnipro had approximately 975 thousand residents, and Odesa had 907 thousand. As a result, Lviv has come close to the mark of one million inhabitants.

According to the publication, compared with 2019, Lviv's population has grown by 44%, or by almost 300 thousand people. One of the reasons for these changes was the relocation of Ukrainians from the more dangerous regions of the country.

Before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine had four million-plus cities: Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Odesa. According to Forbes Ukraine, as of mid-2026, only Kyiv and Kharkiv still had more than a million residents.

At the same time, the publication emphasizes that the indicators presented are model estimates, not results of a population census.

"To estimate the population of cities in 2019, we used the government calculations of that year (obtained during the so-called digital population census) and the territorial structure of the population according to State Statistics Service data. As the basis for current calculations, we took our own estimate of the population of the territory controlled by Ukraine, updated as of 2026. We determined the distribution of the population across regions using two methods: by volumes of water use by the population and by the number of births. To estimate the population of individual cities, the obtained results were adjusted to account for the share of urban population in each region. All indicators are model estimates, not results of a more accurate population census," the publication noted.

As a reminder, earlier "Tvoye Misto" published a column by Avalon Chief Operating Officer Yaroslav Voznyak on how Lviv's population growth affects the real estate market. According to him, officially more than 100 thousand internally displaced persons were registered in the city in 2025, but the actual number of residents could have been significantly higher.
