The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine has submitted the Ukrainian vyshyvanka for consideration for the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The nomination dossier "Vyshyvanka in Ukraine: a socio-cultural tradition" was signed by the Vice Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy – Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna. The document was handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and subsequently to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The Ministry of Culture emphasizes that the vyshyvanka is one of the most widespread elements of Ukraine's intangible cultural heritage and an important symbol of Ukrainian identity, unity, and resilience. The tradition is passed down from generation to generation – in families, through educational institutions, workshops, festivals, and community initiatives.
What the ancient vyshyvanka was like, why not all vyshyvankas are the same, which unique old techniques are being recreated now, and why Galician embroidery became colorful, read in the article "Tvoe Misto".
