Sweden has decided to use Ukrainian versions of city names in Swedish-language official communications. In particular, it refers to "Kyiv" instead of the Russian form, as well as other toponyms related to Ukraine. This was reported in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

"Names are not just words, they carry history, identity and self-determination," commented the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Maria Malmer Stenergard Maria Malmer Stene.

Thus, city names will now be spelled as follows:

  • Kyjiv/Kyiv instead of Kiev;
  • Odesa instead of Odessa;
  • Donbas instead of Donbass.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine noted that such a step is a manifestation of respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and its cultural identity.
