Lviv will be the first in Ukraine to join the European environmental network Green City Accord as an associate member. This was reported by the press service of the Lviv City Council.

They explain that the Green City Accord is an initiative of the European Commission that brings together cities that voluntarily implement the environmental standards of the European Union. Currently, the network includes 134 European cities, and Ukrainian communities can join it from 2025.

The LCC notes that by joining the environmental initiative, Lviv voluntarily commits to improving environmental performance in five areas over the next eight years:

  • air quality;
  • water quality;
  • biodiversity;
  • waste management and circular economy development;
  • reduction of noise pollution.

For Lviv residents, this should result in the gradual implementation of European environmental standards and improvement of the urban environment quality.

The city council also emphasizes that joining the Green City Accord does not involve any additional financial burden on the city budget.

The initiative to prepare the resolution on Lviv's accession to the Green City Accord came from the Lviv Euro-Integration Bureau. Profile departments of the Lviv City Council, communal enterprises, and international partners will join the cooperation.

The draft decision was developed jointly with the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources, Lviv Communal Water Utility "Lvivvodokanal," Lviv Communal Enterprise "Administrator of Household Waste Management Services," and with the expert support of the Resource-Analytical Center "Society and Environment."
