Since the beginning of 2026, Spain has registered 5,232 deaths related to high temperatures, which is the highest figure since records began in 2015. This is reported by reports "EuroNews".

It is noted that in August alone, an estimated 2,147 deaths were registered.

It is explained that the daily mortality monitoring system (MoMo), managed by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), does not account for deaths where heat was explicitly confirmed as the cause of death. MoMo creates statistical estimates of temperature-related mortality based on mortality data and temperature exposure.

The 2026 figures already exceed those of the two summers that previously saw the highest levels of heat-related mortality since the research began: 2022 – 4,789 deaths, and 2023 – 3,035. The current figures cover the period from May 15, when the national plan to combat the health effects of high temperatures is activated annually.

The impact is particularly concentrated on the elderly. Of the 5,232 estimated deaths this year, 5,048 are people over 65 years of age . People over 85 years old account for 62% of the total, with 3,256 deaths. Additionally, 60% of deaths are among women.
