News Roundup: The national team for the Olympics in Beijing, defense prep, and the Pope’s call to pray for peace in Ukraine

Here’s what’s going on.

The Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has approved the composition of the national team for the Winter Olympics in Beijing. More than 3,000 athletes will compete for medals in the Chinese capital. The national team includes four representatives from the Lviv region, who will all compete in luge. These are, in particular, 26-year-old Anton Dukach, 23-year-old Andrii Lysetskyi, 22-year-old Ihor Stakhiv, and 27-year-old Olena Stetskiv. Athletes are trained by Taras Hartsula and Ivan Bayik.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has developed a new version of the order on the military registration of women and sent it for approval to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine and the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. In particular, the new order defines 14 specialties and 6 professions, the acquisition and receipt of which involves military registration. These specialties and professions are related to about 100 military accounting specialties. Previously, it was about 35 specialties, combining more than 200 military ones.

Pope Francis urges all people to pray that every political action will serve the universal fraternity. After reciting the Angelus prayer 23 January, he anxiously suggested that next Wednesday, 26 January, be the Day of Prayer for Peace.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has found the remains of Ukrainian soldiers who were previously considered missing for 80 years. The burial was discovered in Bremen, Germany, after Ukrainian diplomats initiated the archaeological investigation in the place where the industrial construction was planned. As a result, the experts found bones and military tokens of three soldiers, one of which was identified as Ivan Pasternak from Lviv, and the Ministry has already contacted his relatives in our country. The Ukrainian connections of two others, Serhii Selyk (Zelyk) from the Kyiv region and Mykola Kovalchuk from the Volyn region, are still being searched.

Garbage processing complex, which is in a phase of construction on the street Plastova, 13 near the treatment facilities of municipal water supply company «Lvivvodokanal», should be divided into two parts, where mechanical and biological treatments will take place. After mechanical and biological treatment of waste, the outcome will be secondary raw materials: organic, PET, metal, plastic, which can be reused. Also, RDF fuel that can be used in cement plants.
