Due to the ice, pedestrians are advised to be more careful and prepare safe shoes for the next few months.

The Ministry of Health provided recommendations on how to protect yourself from injuries:

  • wear shoes with a tread for better traction on the ground, experts also recommend shoes with soles made of microporous or other soft base and without large heels.
  • elderly people should use sticks or at least one stick when walking for better stability.
  • Unaccompanied walks on ice for pregnant women are dangerous, and ill or weak persons should not go outside unnecessarily.
  • buy «ice-steps» and put them on the soles and heels of your shoes or make similar protection yourself: stick double-sided adhesive tape on a dry sole and heel (crosswise or stepwise) and rub it with sand before leaving.
  • when walking on a slippery surface, your hands should be free to balance, so it’s better not to keep them in your pockets, and not to carry a purse in your hands. The best option in this case is a backpack.
  • bypass the metal hatch covers, as they are usually covered with ice (in addition, they are often poorly secured and can roll over, which is also quite dangerous)
  • stay away from houses – closer to the middle of the sidewalk. During winter, especially in cities, icicles are very dangerous,
  • be especially careful when crossing the road during snowfall and ice (remember that ice conditions significantly increase the braking distance of vehicles)
  • do not rush and do not take big steps, as this reduces stability and increases the likelihood of slipping.

If you fell on the ice and after a while felt a headache, nausea, joint pain, noticed swelling in the soft tissues – you should immediately see a doctor in an emergency room.

We will add that the number of injuries due to ice is growing in Lviv. About one and a half hundred Lviv residents have already applied to the trauma centres of the first territorial medical association of Lviv.
