The Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory has released the meteorological and hydrological results for May 2026. Researchers recorded exceeding the climate norm and a significant deficit of precipitation in the region. This is reported by the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.
Experts note that the average monthly air temperature in May was 16.3°C, which is 0.5°C above the established climate norm. Throughout the month, the weather showed sharp fluctuations - from almost winter frosts at the beginning to summer heat already in the first decade.
Temperature extremes and precipitation levels in the capital
May began with a sharp cold snap, but quickly compensated for it with high temperature readings. Researchers identified the following main climatic parameters for the month:
- The coldest day was May 1st, when the air temperature dropped to 4.2°C before dawn
- The warmest day was May 6th, when thermometers rapidly rose to 29.9°C
- Precipitation amount: 56 millimeters of precipitation fell during the month, which is only 86% of the average monthly norm
Hydrological regime and flood recession in the Kyiv region
In parallel, meteorologists released data on the hydrological regime of water bodies in the Kyiv region in May 2026. Throughout the month, a steady trend of decreasing water levels was observed on most rivers, with a total amplitude of 0.1–0.3 meters. A short-term increase in water levels up to 0.1 meters was noted only in isolated areas during localized rainfall.
Experts recorded the following features of the region's water regime:
- Situation on the Irpin River: from May 17th, a daily increase in water level of 0.4 meters was observed here, caused solely by water management activities
- Overall water content: river levels in the region were only 22–59% of the May norm
- Flood recession: throughout May, the recession of the spring flood continued in the inflow to the Kyiv Reservoir
Hydrologists added that the average inflow of water to the reservoirs in May remains low. In particular, the inflow to the Kyiv Reservoir was recorded at 50% of the norm, and the lateral inflow to the Kaniv Reservoir, provided by the Desna River near the village of Lytky, was 59% of the norm.
