In Switzerland, in the town of Econe, on the morning of July 1, at the headquarters of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X, consecrated four new bishops without a papal mandate. This event was recognized by the Vatican as "an act of a schismatic nature", and the Lefebvrists were excommunicated from the Church. This is reported by reported "Vatican News".
A few days before that, Pope Leo XIV addressed a letter to the head of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X, once again asking to prevent the schismatic act, which would be the announced ordinations of bishops on July 1 without a papal mandate. However, these attempts proved futile.
It should be noted that in the Lviv region, particularly in Lviv, there are also representatives of the Lefebvrist movement – these are supporters of priest Vasyl Kovpak, who many years ago was excommunicated from the Catholic Church for arbitrarily establishing a seminary and ordaining his own priests, following the example of Marcel Lefebvre. He founded the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Josaphat, whose members are called "Kovpakivtsi" (followers of Kovpak).
Meanwhile, according to data from "Spiritual Greatness of Lviv," Vasyl Kovpak continues to serve in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles (Ryasne-1, 15 Lukasevycha St.).
We tell about the incident in the church of Prylbich in the Lviv region, which highlighted the long-standing conflict between the official UGCC parish and the "Kovpakivtsi" via the link.
