On Tuesday, 1 February, the government’s decision to increase the price of plastic bags will take effect, after it was adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers in December last year. This is stated on the website of the Ministry of Economy.

In particular, the minimum retail prices for packages over 50 micrometres thick, intended for packaging and transportation of goods and products at retail, catering and service points will be equal to:

  • UAH 2.00 per package without handles and side folds,
  • UAH 2.50 per package without handles, but with side folds or with handles without side folds
  • UAH 3.00 per package with handles and side folds.

According to the ministry, this decision will limit the circulation of plastic bags and improve the environmental situation in the country.

However, these requirements do not apply to biodegradable and ultra-thin plastic bags intended for packaging and transportation of fresh fish, meat, bulk products, ice and used as primary packaging until 1 January 2023.

We will remind you that since 10 December, the law «About restriction of circulation of plastic bags in the territory of Ukraine» came into force in Ukraine. Free distribution of plastic bags will now be banned in shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, food establishments and services. The ban will not apply to biodegradable bags, as well as ultra-thin plastic bags, which are the primary packaging for fresh fish, meat and meat products, bulk products and ice. Fines for plastic will range from 1,700 hryvnias.
