In the night of May 22, the remains of Colonel of the Ukrainian People's Army, leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists Andriy Melnyk and his wife Sofia Fedak-Melnyk arrived in the Ukrainian capital. This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv Archdiocese of the UGCC.

Veneration program in Kyiv

The remains of the couple were met by the protosyncellus of the Kyiv Archdiocese of the UGCC, Bishop Joseph Milian, along with the clergy of the cathedral. Anyone wishing to pay their respects and pray can do so on May 22 and 23 in the Patriarchal Cathedral at the address: 5 Mykilsko-Slobidska Street.

Schedule of services for Friday, May 22:

  • 7:30 and 9:00 - Divine Liturgies for the repose with a pannychis;
  • 15:00 - Rite of Parastas;
  • 18:00 - Vespers;
  • 19:00 - Prayerful reading of the Psalter.

Schedule for Saturday, May 23:

  • 7:30 and 9:00 - Divine Liturgies for the repose with a pannychis;
  • 15:00 - Central memorial service and funeral rite with the participation of bishops, government representatives, and the public.

Historical background

The reburial is organized at the state level. According to the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 460 of May 15, 2026, a plan of measures was approved, the implementation of which was ensured by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the President, and the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory. The exhumation of the bodies took place on May 19 in Luxembourg.

Andriy Melnyk headed the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists from 1938 to 1964. He was a colonel in the Army of the UNR and a prominent figure in the liberation struggles. Sofia Fedak became his wife in 1929 after supporting him for four years during his Polish imprisonment. The couple was buried in Luxembourg after the colonel's death in 1964.
