Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiha called not to allow the escalation of relations between Ukraine and Poland against the backdrop of discussions about the name of one of the Ukrainian military units. According to him, the escalation of the conflict does not serve the interests of either Ukrainians or Poles.
Sybiha noted that over the last almost two years, Kyiv and Warsaw have been gradually resuming constructive dialogue on difficult historical issues. In particular, the parties unblocked searches and exhumations, carried out reburials of victims, and also resumed the work of the congress of historians.
Commenting on the disputes surrounding the name of the Ukrainian unit, Sybiha stated that it was the choice of the military themselves. According to him, the Ukrainian defenders had no anti-Polish intentions, but sought to honor those who fought against Soviet and Russian imperial policies at the time.
The minister also thanked Poland for its support of Ukraine during the full-scale war and called on both states to resolve even the most complex issues through dialogue, mutual understanding, and openness.
