Galicians, Ukrainians, and Europeans: How do Leopolitans Identify Themselves?

Lviv people, known as Leopolitans in English, like to have many affiliations at once. Residents of remote communities in the Lviv metropolitan area most often identify themselves as Galicians – 94.9%, while in the city of Lviv – 93.6%. Lviv residents consider themselves mostly citizens of Ukraine – 99.6% and also Europeans – 68.9%.

Residents of the Lviv area mostly consider themselves citizens of Ukraine – 99.3%. At the same time, 93.3% also name themselves Galicians, referring to the ancient region of Ukrainian Galicia, once its own kingdom. And 98.7% also identify themselves as citizens of their town/village. These are the data of a sociological survey, conducted in October – November by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology about potential residents of the Lviv agglomeration.

Also: 77.4% of respondents call themselves Lviv residents, 55.6% consider themselves residents of Greater Lviv, 72.4% consider themselves residents of the local community, and 66.1% call themselves Europeans. A small portion of respondents identify themselves as citizens of the former USSR – 10.7%.

Family doctors are those whom residents of Lviv agglomeration trust the most – 76%, and priests – 70%.

On the other hand, slightly more than half of the respondents trust the head of the community – 52%, and only 20% trust their MP.

The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology conducted a sociological survey «Opinions and Perspectives of Residents of the Potential Lviv Agglomeration on Decentralization and Intermunicipal Cooperation» in October-November 2021 at the request of the Council of Europe’s Decentralization and Public Administration Reform in Ukraine Program.

In particular, 1,000 respondents were interviewed among the settlements in Lviv territorial community [administrative unit]. Also, 500 respondents were interviewed among residents of Davydiv, Zymna Voda, Sokilnyky, Solonka, part Ivano-Frankove [community, not the Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine], and Murovane communities (part). Another 500 respondents are residents of Horodok, Zhovkva, Zhovtanets, Ivano-Frankove community (part), Kulykiv, Murovane (part), Novoyarychiv, Obroshyne, Pidberiztsi, Pustomyty. A total of 2,000 respondents were interviewed. Maximum statistical error with a probability of 0.95 and a design effect of 1.5.
