The removed Soviet symbol will now join the collection of the State Aviation Museum named after O.K. Antonov.
The Kyiv City Council decided to dismantle this star on December 18, 2025. At the same time, city deputies supported the removal of other objects from public spaces, including monuments to Mykhailo Bulgakov, Anna Akhmatova, and Mykhailo Glinka. It should be noted that the monument to the writer Bulgakov on Andriyivskyy Descent was recently dismantled – on June 4.
Cleansing of the capital's public spaces and dismantling of monuments
The process of preparing to remove these signs took several years. In December 2024, an interdepartmental working group at the Kyiv City State Administration considered a list of objects proposed for full or partial dismantling. This list, in addition to the 'Kyiv - Hero City' sign, included monuments to Bulgakov and Dmytro Manuilsky. Earlier, in April 2024, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory recognized Bulgakov as a symbol of Russian imperial policy.
In total, the Kyiv City State Administration recalled that in 2023, the Kyiv City Council added 251 objects to the list of those to be removed from public spaces in Kyiv. As of the end of 2025, over 170 of them have already been dismantled. Currently, another 36 objects are being prepared for dismantling or modification by the respective balance holders. Separately, 37 objects have the status of cultural heritage monuments, so the work on them will only be possible after coordination with the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
