A modern radiation protection shelter has been erected in one of the local lyceums in the Shevchenkivskyi district of the capital. The dual-purpose structure has a total area of 1,300 square meters and can accommodate up to 600 people simultaneously, providing them with full protection and comfortable conditions for continuing lessons during air raids. This was reported by reported Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Conditions for learning and autonomy of the safety space

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, this lyceum has been forced to operate exclusively online due to the lack of a safe place for children and teachers. The emergence of a new modern shelter will allow the institution to fully resume in-person learning and even increase the number of students in the new academic year.

  • to conduct full-fledged classes during air raids, the space has been equipped with teachers' tables, students' desks, whiteboards, two touch panels, poufs, sofas, and floor mats;

The protective structure also has a fully equipped medical office and a separate room for meals. In case of possible power outages, the shelter is equipped with an emergency power supply capable of maintaining the space's life support for 72 hours. The premises have the necessary stocks of drinking and technical water and are connected to wireless internet.

Expansion of the network of protective structures in the capital's schools

The head of the city noted that over the past two years, Kyiv has not only repaired and equipped existing basements but also built 9 capital shelters from scratch for educational institutions. During the current year, the city authorities plan to complete the construction of several more similar facilities and repair the simplest shelters in 109 educational institutions.

"The enemy constantly shells Kyiv. Including educational institutions. Therefore, the safety of our children during the educational process remains relevant for the capital," emphasized Vitali Klitschko.

The Mayor of Kyiv specifically addressed the heads of district state administrations with a demand to treat the preparation and equipping of all school shelters with maximum responsibility before the start of the new academic year.
