The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, stated in an interview the intention to involve European countries in the peace process with Russia, specifically in discussing a possible cessation of strikes on airports from both sides within the framework of the so-called "airport truce".

The official did not specify which airfields could be involved; however, there have been repeated suggestions in the public sphere regarding the possible inclusion of Kyiv and Lviv airports in such a scenario. In this regard, we contacted the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine to find out if they are considering the possibility of resuming air traffic.

The State Aviation Administration is preparing the resumption of airport operations

In response to a request from "Tvoe Misto" they reported that currently preparatory measures are being carried out regarding the possible resumption of airport operations.

This refers to the activities of the working group on preparation for the resumption of operation of Ukrainian airports, which was established on March 13. It is tasked with developing proposals for the Ministry regarding the resumption of civil aviation flights and the protection of critical infrastructure, as well as considering problematic issues that may arise during the preparation for airport launches and ways to solve them.

The State Aviation Administration added, that since the beginning of 2026, unscheduled inspections of airfields, specifically the SE "Boryspil International Airport" and the SE "Lviv International Airport," have also been conducted to assess their condition and compliance with certification requirements.

It was also noted that "Lviv International Airport" has developed a plan that provides for operation and passenger service algorithms in the event of emergency situations, specifically during missile strikes or drone attacks.

In response to a request from "Tvoe Misto" Lviv Airport stated that they know nothing about the "airport truce," but they ensure "maintaining the operational readiness of the enterprise to resume work, provided the security situation is resolved."

Therefore, as noted by state structures, the resumption of flights in Ukraine is possible only after the termination or lifting of martial law taking into account the security situation in the country. After this, the service's specialists will conduct an assessment of the actual state of the airports to determine those whose operations can be resumed first.

"It is more likely that one should wait for an airport near Moscow to burn down"

A similar opinion was expressed in an interview with "Tvoe Misto" by Ivan Kyrychevskyi, a serviceman of the 413th SBS Regiment "Raid" and a weapons expert. He noted that real agreements with Russia regarding such initiatives are unlikely.

According to him, the Russian side does not demonstrate readiness for reciprocal steps, despite attempts to form corresponding narratives in the information space.

"Therefore, on one hand, political logic might involve talking about 'how realistic it is' that we could agree on some security corridors for Kyiv and Lviv in terms of airports. However, in a military and practical sense, you know, maybe we should rather start timing when, for example, the Ramenskoye airport near Moscow or another airport burns down", - he said.

He also explained that Ramenskoye Airport (Zhukovsky) is one of the key airports near Moscow, which was previously used for civil air traffic with the temporarily occupied Crimea. Currently, according to him, strategic Tu-160 bombers are stationed there, which changes its functional purpose.

Kyrychevskyi added that such a situation, in his opinion, indicates Russia's unwillingness to reach agreements in a 'soft' format, so further interactions will take place by other methods.

"The real setup of the project is roughly such that Russians do not want to negotiate nicely, so we will have to negotiate with them using the means they understand", - he concluded.

As a reminder, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that Russia could agree to such an initiative because Russian airports, in particular Sheremetyevo in Moscow and Pulkovo in Saint Petersburg, are becoming more vulnerable to Ukrainian long-range strikes. As previously stated by Sybiha, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already discussed this idea with certain European leaders.
